Lore & Background

The story follows the Hero, initially a six-year-old boy traveling with his father Pankraz. After Pankraz is killed by Ladja and his minions, members of the Order of Zugzwang, the Hero endures ten years of enslavement building a great temple before escaping. He reunites with Sancho, his father's loyal attendant, and seeks out his mother Martha, who was believed dead but is alive in Gotha. The plot intersects with Prince Harry, whom the Hero meets as a slave; Harry eventually returns to Coburg to marry Maria. A pivotal turning point occurs when the Hero marries either Bianca, Nera, or Debora (in the Nintendo DS version), only for his wife and two children to be turned to stone by monsters. After an eight-year search, the Hero revives them using the Elfin Elixir, then avenges Pankraz by killing Ladja, restores Zenithia castle to the sky, and enters a time warp to retrieve a Golden Orb from his childhood self.

In Their Own Story

The journey begins with the Hero's birth, where the player names him. As a child, he explores Uptaten Towers with Bianca to find a Golden Orb before Pankraz sacrifices himself against Ladja. Ten years later, the escaped slaves encounter Rodrigo Briscoletti in Mostroferrato, who sets trials involving the Circle of Fire and Circle of Water for the Hero to marry his daughter Nera. Depending on the version, the Hero may instead wed Bianca or Debora. After becoming king of Gotha, the Hero's family is petrified during a monster attack. Eight years later, his son and daughter find him; the son wields the Zenithian Sword and armor. The party travels to exotic locations like an ice mansion and a volcano, eventually reaching Zenithia. To defeat Korol, the king of the Order of Zugzwang, the Hero must restore the Dragon God and retrieve the Golden Orb from his past self.

Dragon Quest V utilizes standard turn-based battles where characters level up via experience points. A defining feature is the ability to tame monsters, with 40 available in the original Super Famicom version and 71 in the PlayStation 2 remake. These monsters can fight alongside humans and gain levels. The game features a wagon for resting party members and an advanced tactics system allowing individual AI control for each ally. Unlike Dragon Quest IV, which allowed four active members, the original V limits the party to three, a restriction lifted to four in the PS2 and DS remakes. Upon completion, players can access a bonus dungeon, the first of its kind in the series. The game also introduced playable pregnancy, a mechanic later seen in titles like Story of Seasons.
